Did Microsoft’s artificial intelligence (AI) powered Copilot app vanish mysteriously from your Windows PC? You aren’t alone.
A Windows 11 update that started rolling out on March 11 is deleting Copilot from some Windows PCs.
“We’re aware of an issue with the Microsoft Copilot app affecting some devices. The app is unintentionally uninstalled and unpinned from the taskbar,” Microsoft wrote in a support document about the update. The company noted this only seems to impact the regular Copilot and not the Microsoft 365 Copilot app.
The company says it’s working on a fix for the problem, but suggested users can reinstall the app in the meantime (sure Microsoft, I’ll get right on that).
Given how much money Microsoft has invested in AI, it’s pretty funny that the company accidentally deleted its flagship AI product.
Microsoft is pushing AI incredibly hard, putting Copilot everywhere (there’s the Copilot app on Windows, Copilot in the company’s Edge browser, a Copilot key on most new laptops, and more). Microsoft is even working Copilot into gaming with claims it will be able to offer real-time guidance to help players.
But while Microsoft and other tech giants push hard on AI, the technology still seems incredibly overhyped. I struggle to find helpful use cases for AI, with it being far too error-prone to be reliable. And AI constantly makes things up, which has gotten Microsoft in trouble before.
And that’s not even getting into the environmental cost of AI, something that’s set to get worse as American AI companies hunt for ever greater amounts of compute power. Meanwhile, China’s Deepseek suggests AI companies might be able to do more with less if they change tactics.
Oh, and AI is hurting people’s critical thinking capabilities, which is just great. Maybe deleting Copilot was a good thing.
