Gmail’s browser client will soon get a design refresh

The design refresh will come with new features for the web, including smart replies

Gmail is getting a new look on the web, an email sent out to G Suite administrators confirms.

The email states that Google will be announcing an early adopter program for a “new experience” in Gmail in the coming weeks. The program will introduce a new web design for Gmail and several new features, to boot.

The changes will also be made available to users with personal Gmail accounts.

The tech giant says users can expect a “fresh, clean look for Gmail on the web” and the addition of ‘Smart Reply’ functionality on web, following suit with the mobile version.

It will also bring the following changes:

  • “Easy access” to G Suite apps, such as Google Calendar, from within Gmail.
  • Ability to “snooze” emails and choose when they reappear in your inbox.
  • Offline support — though Google notes this is coming shortly after the program announcement.

Google previously announced Gmail Offline for web in 2016, and promises it will introduce native offline support in the new Gmail experience by June 2018.

While all this sounds exciting, there is one downside — Google says it can’t guarantee that all popular Chrome extensions will work with the new Gmail off the bat. It recommends administrators test out any critical Chrome extensions before rolling out the new design to their entire organization.

Google says it will share more details when the program opens, so those interested should keep their eyes tuned to Google’s G Suite Updates blog and the company-wide blog The Keyword.
