Samsung might make only dual-curved Galaxy S handsets in the future

It looks like the choice to make Galaxy Note 7’s dual-curved edge design the only option may be a sign of things to come for the Galaxy S line.

DJ Koh, Samsung’s head of mobile technology stated in a media interview during the Note 7’s NYC launch in early August 2016 that “Samsung has considered that it would make the edge display as the identity of the Galaxy S smartphone lineup if the company can provide consumers differentiated user experience through software and user-friendly functions [for the curved screen].”

The company first debuted a dual-curved design with the Galaxy S6 Edge launched in 2015, which exceeded expectations for demand, requiring the company to open a third production factory. The company reprised the option with 2016’s S7 Edge, which became the best selling Android phone in the global market in the first half of 2016 with over 13.3 million shipped, according to Strategy Analytics.

There is a vocal contingent of Samsung enthusiasts who are not fans of the rounded edge design, however, citing its tendency towards causing mis-clicks with small-handed users and the difficulty of finding protective cases. Only time will tell, though, whether that contingent is large enough to matter to the tech giant.
