Modular devices are now a thing.
We’ve seen LG unveil the G5 smartphone with modular aspects and Google announced Project Ara will ship with six modular add-ons next year. Blocks, which launched its popular Kickstarter campaign last year that raised over $1.6 million, has opened pre-orders for its modular smartwatch to all.
Blocks is unique as it’s smartwatch that is composed of two distinct parts: the watch face – which is known as the Core – and a band with links that help make it modular. Each Core comes equipped with everything the smartwatch needs to function properly, including a display, processor and connectivity suite. It’s also able, without the addition of specific modules, to do things like push phone notifications and act as an activity tracker.
The cost is $330 USD and shipping to Canada costs an additional $15. This price also includes 4 modules (extra battery, heart rate, GPS, flashlight, a programmable button, and an “adventure module” that includes a 3-in-1 sensor that combines digital humidity, pressure and temperature sensors in one. If you go beyond the four included modules, extra modules are priced at $35 each.
As for specs, Blocks runs Android Marshmallow with a 1.39-inch 400×400 AMOLED display, 300 mAh Battery, Snapdragon 2100 Wear processor, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, and water and dust resistant. Blocks compatible with both iOS and Android devices.
The estimated shipping date is set for October 2016.
