While the number of available games and apps in Samsung and Oculus’ Gear VR app store is rapidly growing, video experiences are still a rarity on the platform. Samsung’s Milk VR video service is slowly attempting to solve this issue, but it looks like the company has plans to commit even further to the creation of virtual reality video.
According to a recent announcement at the Sundance Film Festival, Samsung plans to open up a new studio in New York dedicated to creation of Gear VR video content.
It’s unclear exactly what video content Samsung’s new initiative will work on, but the studio is set to be located inside a pre-existing Samsung Office, rather than a completely new facility.
Samsung also announced a one-year partnership with the Sundance Institute that aims to nurture movie makers in the virtual reality space. Since being started by Robert Redford, he of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid fame, Sundance has become dedicated to training filmmakers year round.
This isn’t the first time Samsung has worked with Hollywood on a video project. In 2015, the company partnered with Skybound Entertainment, the studio behind The Walking Dead television series, on Gone, a 360 degree VR experiences focused on a woman looking for her daughter who has mysteriously disappeared.
