Office 2016, the latest version of Microsoft’s venerable productivity suite, is here. Included in this year’s refresh are new desktop versions of Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, OneNote, Project, Visio and Access.
Among many other new features, the suite includes new collaboration tools. For instance, multiple users can now work together on a Word document — as well as PowerPoint presentations and OneNote documents — and see various changes as they appear in real-time. It’s a feature anyone that has shared a Google Doc will be familiar with, and, in many ways, Office 2016 feels like a product made in response to competitors that have unseated the one-time king of productivity software.
“The way people work has changed dramatically, and that’s why Microsoft is focused on reinventing productivity and business processes for the mobile-first, cloud-first world,” said Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella in a statement issued to MobileSyrup.
“These latest innovations take another big step forward in transforming Office from a familiar set of individual productivity apps to a connected set of apps and services designed for modern working, collaboration and teamwork.”
Although ostensibly designed to work best with Windows 10, the suite is actually available on Windows 7 and above. Starting today, Office 365 subscribers can download all the included apps. Office 2016 is also available as a one-time purchase for both PC and Mac.
As it’s done with Windows 10, Microsoft plans to push automatic updates to the collection. Office 365 subscribers will begin receiving starting next month, while anyone going the retail route to obtain their copy will have to until next year.
Lastly, the company also announced that Microsoft Stores in Canada will host free, one-hour workshops to help new and experience Office users get acquainted with all that’s new in this year’s version.
In other Microsoft related news, the company is expected to announced new Windows 10, as well as Windows 10 mobile, at a keynote presentation on October 6.
