Earlier this week Motorola, Samsung and LG unveiled their first set of smartwatches running Android Wear. The LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live are available to pre-order and both have a shipping date of early July (the G Watch priced at $249 and the Gear Live available for $220). The Motorola Moto 360 is expected to launch sometime later this summer.
When Google announced Android Wear, its dedicated OS for wearables, it listed “Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung; chip makers Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; and fashion brands like the Fossil Group.”
TechCruch has revealed a bit more information of ASUS’ plans, specifically stating that the Taiwanese company will release its Android Wear-powered smartwatch this coming September. The details of its design are still unknown, but the wearable will have an AMOLED display and reportedly priced well below its competitors around $149 (USD). Apparently ASUS decided to hold off from announcing its smartwatch as they didn’t want to ‘rush’ it to market.
Finally, a tweet by reputable device leaker @evleaks also claims this information to be true, declaring the code name for ASUS’ Android Wear smartwatch is called ‘Robin’ and “aims to be the thinnest device in the category.’ The G Watch is 9.95mm thin, while the Gear Live is 8.9mm.
