Mobilicity CEO Dave Dobbin recently went on a cross-Canada jaunt to promote their cheap roaming rates. Their rates come in at $0.20/minute while the Big 3 averages around $0.40/minute in Canada and $1.50/minute in the United States. Dobbin traveled our fine land and also visited his 5 core service cities (Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and Ottawa) with a goal to rack up the roaming charges and compare the cost to Rogers, Bell and TELUS.
During the trip Mobilicity used their $35 plan plus a $10 unlimited data add-on for a total of $45/month. For the Big 3, it was apparently an unlimited $30 plan and they added voice mail and caller display for $12 which somehow made the total come out to $78.37 (Activation fee of $35).
Mobilicity “We’ll Prove It To You” total were revealed today: Over 1,300 minutes and the carrier said they used 728 on their network and spent $130, meanwhile using 646 minutes on the Big 3 for a total cost of $436, representing a difference of 82 minutes and a savings of $306. In total there were 5 provinces plus 3 US states were visited over 13 days.
Dobbin stated that “We used 82 more minutes on the Mobilicity BlackBerry smartphone than on the Big 3 BlackBerry and we still saved $306. The savings could have funded the entire $305 it took to fuel my ride across the country and I’m sure Canadians could also find better ways to spend their money than overpaying for roaming.”
