Gamer finds way to use Nintendo Switch with VR, but only for video playback

The Nintendo Switch isn’t officially compatible with virtual reality headsets, but that hasn’t stopped one gamer from managing to use the console-handheld hybrid with the technology anyway.

YouTube blogger Nintendrew slotted his Switch into a Durovis Dive 7 headset, although he noted that other tablet-sized headsets should work as well. Using the Switch’s hidden web browser to navigate to YouTube, he opened a properly formatted video from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

It worked for him, albeit with some video quality issues, given the Switch’s 6.2 inch LCD screen with 1280 x 720 pixels resolution. It’s worth nothing that he could only watch video playback from the N64 classic through this method, not actually play any part of the game.

The company has been rather non-committal when it comes to virtual reality. In December 2016, legendary Nintendo game designer Shigeru Miyamoto told The Verge hat he’s “definitely interested” in the technology, but “it’s one that [he] think[s] that, given the environment right now, is difficult to bring to market in a way that reaches the broadest audience.” Around the same time, a patent filed by Nintendo for VR technology was revealed, which in theory would work with the Switch.

Then, earlier this year, Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima told Japanese news agency Nikkei that the company will “support it in one form or another” only once they can work out making it comfortable to play for long periods of time.
