Leaker: Apple will release a new iPhone Air 2, no matter the sales

Looks like the Air will stay around for now

A known Apple leaker claims that Apple will push ahead with at least two generations of the iPhone Air (despite struggling sales), while also suggesting the iPhone 18 will see virtually no exterior design changes.

The leaker, known as “Fixed Focus Digital,” said in a post on Weibo (translated by MacRumours) that “The Air 2 will proceed with its standard product iteration cycle; no matter how abysmal the sales turn out to be, Apple will grit its teeth and push through with at least two generations…”

In another post, Fixed Focus Digital wrote that the standard iPhone 18 will not have any major changes to its exterior design, aside from a few minor tweaks to the dimensions.

To add some context, sales of the slim iPhone have reportedly struggled really badly since its launch last September. A KeyBank Capital Markets Survey for investors noted that there was “virtually no demand” for the device, with supply analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reporting that suppliers were expected to reduce capacity by more than 80 per cent between launch and Q1 of 2026. MacRumours notes that supplier Luxshare stopped making the Air in October, with another supplier, Foxconn, expected to end production by the end of December.

However, the subscription-based publication The Information notes that Apple is now considering redesigning the iPhone Air to add a second rear camera, addressing one of the main complaints about the current model. One report suggests that the second camera could be a 48-megapixel Fusion Ultra Wide lens. Another report suggests that the second generation will include weight reduction, vapour-chamber cooling, and improved battery capacity, alongside other performance improvements.

The Air 2 is reportedly set to follow in spring 2027.
