Meta reenters the AI game with new ‘Muse Spark’ model

Meta has a new successor for Llama

Meta Superintelligence Labs is launching its first model since the overhaul of its multi-billion-dollar AI effort.

Named Muse Spark, the model now powers the Meta AI app and website in the US, according to the company. The new model will then appear in WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, Messenger, and Meta’s smart glasses. Alongside this, it will also roll out in other countries.

Like Google Gemini, Meta is touting Muse Spark as “purpose-built for Meta’s products” and says it will be available to some of the company’s partners in a private preview. The company also promises the ability to run AI sub-agents to handle questions more effectively and faster, as well as support for multimodal input, including both text and images.

As The Verge notes, the inclusion of both text and image inputs is particularly relevant to Meta’s AI-powered camera glasses (Meta Ray-Bans, for context). This will let users toggle between a faster “Instant” mode and a “Thinking” mode that is supposed to deliver more thoroughly reasoned results, similar to Microsoft’s Think Deeper.

The company also noted that Muse Spark can answer “complex questions in science, math, and health,” with the last part being particularly eyebrow-raising given the controversy surrounding AI Health chatbots. Meta has noted that Muse Spark’s multimodal perception is “especially valuable for health,” and can “navigate health questions with more detailed responses, including some questions involving images and charts.”

In its announcement, The company showed off its chatbot that estimates a meal’s calorie count, which The Verge notes is not only popular but often hit-or-miss.

The Muse series is set to be Meta’s second major foray into advanced AI projects, following the delayed 2025 release of the latest Llama model.
