This is the year of thin phones, and while they aren’t getting a lot of traction, these phones are pretty impressive. I absolutely love using the iPhone Air, and ex-MobileSyrup-er Brad Bennett was also a big fan of this phone. And while the phone is a thin marvel, the Galaxy S25 Edge is impressive. Samsung’s thin handset might be slightly thicker, but it has a bigger battery, a 200-megapixel camera, and an ultrawide shooter.
Other impressive phones that came to Canada this year include the OnePlus 15, which offers a 7,300mAh battery and the RedMagic 11 Pro with a 7,500mAh battery. Both include vapour chambers, with the RedMagic 11 Pro featuring flowing liquid cooling and the OP15 with aerospace-grade aerogel for insulation.
While these four devices impressed me this year, alongside the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which fits a vapour chamber with deionized water sealed inside to help with performance, and an aluminum unibody, which is optimized for performance and battery, even with only a 5,088mAh battery (GSMArena), the iPhone 17 Pro can last about two days.
However, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 takes the cake. Pushing the envelope, the phone weighs 215g, and when it’s unfolded, it’s 4.2mm thin. Additionally, it features 16GB of RAM, up to 1TB of storage, Snapdragon 8 Elite, a 6.5-inch Cover Screen, and an 8-inch foldable screen, with a 200-megapixel primary camera, a 10-megapixel telephoto, and a 12-megapixel.
The Honor Magic V5 might be the thinnest foldable smartphone on the market (not tri-folding), but at its thinnest, it’s 4.1mm, only 0.1mm thicker than the Galaxy Fold 7.
Year over year, Samsung has been improving the Z Fold series, and with the Z Fold 7, the company has made a phone with a good Cover Screen with the perfect aspect ratio, an incredibly thin device with a very sturdy body.
If Samsung’s Galaxy TriFold came to Canada, it’d definitely get this award, but until then, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is the ‘Most Innovative’ phone of the year.
