Rogers WiFi Hotspots will no longer be available starting July 21.
Rogers says it’s removing WiFi Hotspots as the demand has decreased dramatically over the past five years. It also noted that other sources of free, public Wi-Fi are available, with Western Canada still offering over 20,000 hotspots. But after July 21, Rogers will no longer provide any hotspots.
The telecom will provide customers on the Rogers Basic BYOD plan who may have been using WiFi Hotpots an additional 3GB of data to their plans, but of course, if they go over the 3GB, overage rates will apply.
Free, public Wi-Fi is available all around the city of Toronto, and you can grab it from restaurants, coffee shops, libraries and more, but I like how New York does it. The city itself provides Wi-Fi through LinkNYC, which is super fast, free public Wi-Fi, and these structures provide spots to charge your phones too. Toronto should place similar infrastructure around the city, which would really help people with low amounts of data in their plans.
In recent Rogers news, the company has improved internet in B.C.’s Southern Gulf Islands with an undersea cable, but its technicians have also gone on strike in Abbotsford, B.C.
