The Motorola Razr is $999, the most affordable foldable in Canada this year

Because I spent my entire review period using the Motorola Razr Ultra as my daily driver, the base 2025 Razr was put on the back burner. However, I want to highlight this as the flip-style foldable that you should actually buy.

The smartphone costs $999.99 in Canada and includes 256GB of storage, which would be great for any handset in the North, but it is also one that folds. To compare, when Samsung released the Z Flip 6 in Canada, the company priced it at $1,462.99 for the 256GB variant, which is about a $450 price difference.

Spec-wise, the Razr and the Z Flip 6 aren’t too different. Some key differences include the processor – the Razr sports the 4nm Mediatek Dimensity 7400X, while Samsung has the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. You lose out on RAM with the Razr as it has 8GB versus the 12GB of RAM on Samsung’s model. While it’s more expensive, Samsung has more variety with 256GB and 512GB storage options, compared to only 256GB on the Razr.

The Razr has a larger 6.9-inch display than the 6.7-inch Z Flip 6, but both have a 120Hz refresh rate and a full HD+ panel. Motorola’s external display is slightly larger at 3.6 inches versus the 3.4-inch screen on the Z Flip 6, and the Razr has a higher 90Hz refresh rate.

Each phone has a 50-megapixel primary shooter, but I prefer Samsung’s camera over the Razr’s; both take good photos. On the other hand, the Razr has a larger 4,500mAh battery compared to Samsung’s 4,000mAh battery.

Both devices are waterproof. And depending on your viewing angle, you can still slightly see the crease on either handset. Both phones come in a variety of fun colours, but Razr has some pleather options, which some people might like.

And if you’re into AI, both use Google’s Gemini and have their own assortment of AI features to discover. This includes Motorola’s suite of AI features like Catch Me Up and Remember This versus Samsung’s Now Brief, Chat Assist, Transcript Assist and Instant Slow-mo.

Samsung and Motorola have produced some solid foldables, but I’d recommend Motorola’s offering if you’re looking for an affordable flip phone for yourself or a teen.
