Qualcomm reportedly has a Snapdragon 8 Elite for foldables

This variant may be used in the OnePlus Open 2

Most foldables on the market typically use the same flagship SoC as their candy bar counterparts; however, this year, it looks like Qualcomm is making a special chip for foldables.

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite sports an 8-core CPU that offers six performance cores and two Prime Oryon Cores; however, another version of the 8 Elite offers one less performance core. According to Mishaal Rahman, citing OEM sources, foldables will use this 7-core variant. However, the devices will lose out a bit on performance, as AnTuTu and Geekbench both show that the devices will have slightly lower scores.

However, OEMs can still choose whether they want to use this foldable version of the 8 Elite or the regular variant. Rumours suggest the OnePlus Open 2 will use this 7-core Snapdragon 8 Elite. There are some benefits, though, as Android Police points out that this seven-core version should offer lower power consumption and heat generation without making any noticeable changes to performance. This will help foldables as they don’t offer the same cooling systems as regular devices.
