Android ‘Expressive Captions’ feature launches in the U.S.

Google’s Live captions are improving with a new AI feature called “Expressive Captions,” which can show more than basic language, such as sounds and actions.

Expressive Captions on Android emphasize tone and personality, which can be lost when turning on transcriptions. In the example Google provides, the captions include onomatopoeia, capitalized words, and ambient sounds.

Expressive Captions will be available across all Android apps. You can use them in social media apps when watching live streams or your Google Photos reels when watching videos you’ve taken. Google says it’s on the device, so none of the information goes to the cloud, and you can use it while you’re in airplane mode.

Expressive Captions will be available in English on Android 14 and above, with Live Caption in the U.S., so it’s likely this feature won’t take too long to come to Canada.
