Apple announces Messages and Live Video over satellite

Emergency SOS and Find My via satellite is available in 17 countries, including Canada

At the 2024 Apple event, the Cupertino tech giant revealed new features for its Emergency SOS via Satellite, which first launched on the iPhone 14.

One of these features is the ability to share live video over satellite with 911 dispatchers in iOS 18. If you share a video of where you are or what’s happening, this can help 911 dispatchers find you.

Messages via satellite are also available in Canada and the U.S. You can now send messages via SOS to loved ones to let them know if you’re all right but just in the middle of a forest or on a hike and don’t have regular smartphone service.

Emergency SOS and Messages via satellite are available in 17 countries, including Canada.

It’s unclear if Apple will finally start charging for Emergency SOS — but I’m not complaining.
