The ghost of the Essential Phone is fading away

OSOM was a privacy-minded Android phone maker birthed from the death of Essential

The once exciting brand Essential has now fallen from grace twice. After being shuttered due to poor sales and a top-tier creep boss, some of the remaining Essential team put together a new brand called OSOM, which is now also reportedly failing.

OSOM stands for out of sight, out of mind, and the idea behind its phone was to make a very privacy-minded Android device. But when OSOM’s OV1 phone was released, it didn’t garner much hype or favourable reviews, and now it’s come to light that the CEO Jason Keats and other high-level execs at the company have been embezzling funds through it.

The first OSOM phone was released in collaboration with the crypto brand Solana, but the companies have apparently parted ways since then, and now OSOM is folding as reported by Android Authority.

On its way out the door, the company attempted to pivot to making an AI camera and sell itself to HP, but neither of those plans seemed to pan out. Now, most employees are being laid off this week, with a select few staying on to finish the remaining contracted security updates needed for the OV1 phone.
