Streaming in Canada on Disney+, Netflix, Paramount+ and Prime Video [Aug. 26-Sept. 1]

Only Murders in the Building returns for its fourth season this week

Every week, MobileSyrup outlines some of the most notable movies and TV shows that recently hit Canadian streaming platforms.

Our ‘Streaming in Canada’ column typically focuses on new content from Amazon’s Prime Video, Crave and Netflix, but other services like Apple TV+ and Disney+ will be mentioned when relevant. Premium video-on-demand (PVOD) platforms are also fair game as movies continue to come to digital early.

Finally, we’ll highlight shows or movies that are made by Canadian companies, involve notable Canadian cast or crew and/or are filmed in Canada.


Disney+

Only Murders in the Building (Season 4)

Disney+ Canada date: August 27th, 2024 (first episode, new episode every Tuesday)
Genre: Mystery comedy-drama
Runtime: Ten episodes (around 30 minutes each)

As a Hollywood studio tries to turn their podcast into a film, Mabel, Charles and Oliver must contend with the murder of Charles’ stunt double and friend.

Only Murders in the Building was created by Steve Martin (Planes, Trains & Automobiles) and John Robert Hoffman (Grace & Frankie) and stars Martin, Hamilton, Ontario’s Martin Short (SCTV) and Selena Gomez (Wizards of Waverly Place). It’s worth noting that Hamilton, Ontario’s Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek) makes an appearance as himself.

Disney+ costs $7.99/month for Standard with Ads, $11.99/month or $119.99/year for Standard (no ads) and $14.99/month or $149.99/year for Premium. The service is available on AndroidiOS, Apple TV, Google TV and more.

Netflix

Terminator Zero [Netflix Original]

Netflix Canada date: August 29th, 2024
Genre: Sci-fi action anime
Runtime: Eight episodes (around 30 minutes each)

Set before the events of Terminator 2: Judgment DayTerminator Zero follows a doctor and his family in Japan under the protection of a warrior from the future as they’re hunted by a cyborg.

Based on the Terminator films from Canada’s James Cameron, Terminator Zero was created by Mattson Tomlin (The Batman) and features the voices of Timothy Olyphant (Justified), André Holland (Moonlight), Sonoya Mizuno (Devs), Rosario Dawson (Ahsoka) and Ann Dowd (The Leftovers).

In this A Quiet Place prequel, a terminally ill woman must navigate a desolate New York City with her cat and a stranger amid an alien invasion.

A Quiet Place: Day One was written and directed by Michael Sarnoski (Pig) and stars Lupita Nyong’o (12 Years A Slave), Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things), Alex Wolff (Hereditary) and Djimon Honsou (returning from A Quiet Place: Part II).
