WordPress owner makes a 50 million bet on all-in-one messaging app Texts

Similar to Beeper, Texts is a unified hub, enabling users to seamlessly access and respond to messages from WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Signal, iMessage, and more, all from one app.

Popular publishing and blogging platform WordPress’ owner, Automattic, also owns several other platforms, including Tumblr, Gravatar, Pocket Casts and more.

The company has now made a new acquisition. The $7.5 billion USD (roughly $10.3 billion CAD)-valued company has acquired Texts, an app that lets you access and manage all your messaging apps from one place, in a deal valued at $50 million USD (roughly $68 million CAD).

Texts is similar to the popular all-in-one messaging app Beeper, which currently has a wait list in the thousands.

Like Beeper, Texts is a unified hub, enabling users to seamlessly access and respond to messages from WhatsApp, Instagram, LinkedIn, Signal, iMessage, and more, all from one app.

“Self-publishing, commerce, and messaging covers a good chunk of all human activity, and they’re also three areas where I think an open-source solution is necessary for the long term,” said Matt Mullenweg, Automattic’s CEO, regarding the company’s variety of acquisitions (via The Verge).

Mullenweg pointed out the two aspects that appealed to him about Texts. First, he commends Texts’ founder, Kishan Bagaria, as a tech genius of a generation who will make a lasting impact. Secondly, Texts’ security model, which relies on on-device encryption instead of storing messages in the cloud, aligns with his ethical stance.
