Ubisoft Montreal announces ancient Egypt set Assassin’s Creed: Origins

During Microsoft’s 2017 E3 keynote, Ubisoft revealed the next entry in its long-running Assassin’s Creed franchise, Assassin’s Creed Origins.

Like earlier rumours indicated, the game is set in ancient Egypt and will launch on the PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 27th. In the game, players take on the role of Bayek, an Egyptian sheriff. Gameplay wise Origins seems very similar to other entries in the Assassin’s Creed franchise, with players free-running over objects and dispatching foes in elaborate fashion.

The game, however, did seem somewhat clunky, with combat lacking the streamlined gameplay the series is known for. Those who still remember the painful, glitchy misstep that was Assassin’s Creed Unity, will likely be disappointed to hear that at least at the outset, Assassin’s Creed Origins could suffer from the same issues. The demo of the game shown off during Microsoft’s E3 presentation looked visually impressive and was reportedly running in 4K on the Xbox One X, though it remains unclear if the resolution was native 4K or just upconverted 1080p resolution.

The game has reportedly been in development for four years with Ubisoft Montreal beginning work on the title following the release of Assassin’s Creed IV Black Flag, arguably the last compelling entry in the series.

Gameplay shown off at Microsoft’s event included sneaking around and bow and arrow action, as well as ‘Hawk Detection,’ a new feature that allows players to use an overhead avian spy to help survey the area.

It’s likely that we’ll learn more about Assassin’s Creed Origins at Ubisoft’s E3 press conference.
