Sony’s PlayStation 4 is getting a significant update tomorrow that’s set to add a variety of the new features to the console, including support for external hard drives, a useful feature the Xbox One has had for a number of years.
Along with this update, Sony’s recently released PS4 Pro is also getting a new ‘boost mode’ designed to provide better performance for select legacy games that haven’t been patched to perform better when running on Sony’s more powerful console.
This update also includes a handful of other minor fixes, including improved 2D images when using the PlayStation VR and the resolution of the system screen displayed on the television when in VR mode being “significantly better.”
Interestingly, users are also now able to use voice chat when playing a game in Remote Play mode on PC or with a supported Xperia smartphone, though the PlayStation Vita doesn’t support this feature.
While it’s been possible to install a larger internal drive in the PS4 since the system’s launch, many console owners aren’t willing to crack open their devices. Adding support for external hard drives makes it much easier for the average PS4 owner to upgrade their console’s storage space.
Sony says the update will start rolling out to all PS4 owners on March 9th.
