Twitter adds dedicated GIF button to its iOS and Android app

Twitter rolled out its new algorithmic timeline last week and today announced plans to launch a dedicated GIF button.

Embedding GIFs featured in Twitter posts was first enabled two years ago.

The feature has proven extremely popular, resulting in users sharing over 100 million GIFs on the social network over the course of 2015.

The GIF button is in between the camera and poll icons and adds a GIF library with thousands of options – generated through a partnership with Giphy and Riffsy – allowing users to peruse by keyword, categories and reactions.

Adding a GIF is also available to post on to Twitter via direct message. Twitter notes that the GIF button will start rolling out today to iOS and Android users, then over the next few weeks to its desktop application.

Update – February 24th: The Twitter GIF button has started to appear for Twitter users in Canada on iOS and Android. It’s glorious.
