Back at CES, Samsung announced that it planned to make its latest smartwatch, the Gear S2, compatible with Apple’s iOS operating system.
According to SamMobile, the South Korean company will now bring the majority of its first-party apps to iOS, including Gear Fit Manager, S Health, Smart Camera and Remote Control, later this year. The decision to port Gear Fit Manager to iOS is particularly interesting, as it corroborates the rumour that Samsung is refreshing its Gear Fit line, possibly for Mobile World Congress.
For Samsung, it makes a lot of sense to make its most popular apps available on iOS. Even if a user is set in the world of iOS when it comes to their smartphone or tablet, that doesn’t mean that they should be blocked out of taking full advantage of one of Samsung’s other products, a Windows-based PC or even a Samsung Smart TV, for example.
Over the course of the past year, we’ve seen Microsoft use this strategy to great effect when it comes to the company bringing its suite of Office apps to the iPad Pro, as well the iPhone. Speculation indicates the company even has plans to eventually bring its popular Windows 10 Mobile keyboard to iOS at some point in the near future.
