Facebook is aware iOS users are experiencing diminished battery life on their smartphones after using the company’s mobile app. In an interview with TechCrunch, a spokesperson for Facebook confirmed the company is aware of the bug and working on a fix.
“We have heard reports of some people experiencing battery issues with our iOS app. We’re looking into this and hope to have a fix in place soon,” the spokesperson said.
It’s unclear when the bug made its way into the iOS app — Facebook updates its mobile apps on a weekly basis, often simply for the purpose of A/B testing a feature.
However, it has been speculated the possible cause of the battery drain issue is related to fact Facebook auto-plays videos. When scrolling through the News Feed, the app will play a silent audio track so that the user can see videos without hearing them. With this bug, it’s possible the app continues playing this track even when it’s been pushed to the background, causing the battery to drain.
For its part, Facebook has not said what causes the bug, but at the very least a fix is forthcoming.
