In an email obtained by the Verge, Spotify attempts to inform subscribers that it is less expensive to subscribe to the company’s music streaming service through its website than through the iOS app it offers on iPhones and iPads. “In case you didn’t know, the normal Premium price is only $9.99, but Apple charges 30 percent on all payments made through iTunes,” says the email. “You can get the exact same Spotify for only $9.99/month, and it’s super simple.”
The email then goes on to provide a step-by-step guide on how a user can switch between an iOS-based subscription and one that’s obtained through the company’s website. Take a look at how the email looks in the image below.
Spotify recently closed a $563 million funding round and announced that 20 million people pay to use its service, of 75 million total. It’s been suggested that much of that money will be used in fight against Apple and its own streaming service, Apple Music, which launched at the end of last month.
Many other services, such as Amazon’s Kindle, don’t allow users to make purchases through the iOS app in order to avoid having to charge that 30% premium.
