The New Motorola train is rolling. We’ve seen bits and pieces starting to cohere into a strategy, culminating in the announcement of Moto X, the company’s upcoming flagship. While it’s rumoured that Moto X will have mid-range specs, likely to offset the cost of it being “designed by you” and “assembled in the USA,” there are lots of reasons to be excited by the prospect of such a device.
Dennis Woodside, Motorola’s CEO, told us at the D11 conference in May that the Moto X “knows when it’s in your pocket, knows when it’s in your hand, it’s going to know when you want to take a picture and fire up the cameras… The device will know when you’re in the car and it’s moving at 60mph and you’ll interact with it differently, more safely.” In other words, it’s going to be a very different beast from most Android devices, and will likely benefit from direct access to Google’s Android team. Even if Google doesn’t proffer distinct advantage to Motorola over its other partner OEMs, there will inevitably be something to be gained from living within the walls of the mastermind.
While we don’t know specifically what “designed by you” means just yet, Motorola has put up a splash page asking those interested to enter an email address for more information. The page also claims that by the end of the summer there will be 2000 new employees in Ft. Worth, TX “working to make all of this possible.”
There’s nothing more patriotic than announcing new industry coming to the USA just days before Independence Day. No word on whether the Moto X is coming to Canada, but you better believe our neighbour (with a “u”) to the south is not going to have all the fun.
