Google is supercharging Gmail’s Smart Reply feature with Gemini so it can craft longer, more contextual responses. However, that improvement comes with a cost (literally).
In a post on the Workspace blog, Google detailed the new contextual smart replies feature in Gmail. The company explained how sometimes an email required more than a simple “Sounds good” or “I’m working on it” response, which was all that Smart Reply was really good for.
The Gemini-powered contextual smart replies feature, on the other hand, can offer more detailed responses. Like with the previous version, users will see response options appear at the bottom of the screen after starting a reply. Users can hover over responses for a preview of the text and pick the one that feels right. Additionally, people can edit the responses as needed.
Google says the feature will be available for Gemini Business, Enterprise, Education and Education Premium customers, as well as those with Google One AI Premium subscriptions. In Canada, Google One AI Premium costs $26.99/mo.
Google started rolling out the feature on September 26th and it can take up to 15 days for it to become available.
