Forget Geico: New Telus subscription promises up to 15 percent savings on energy bills

Subscribers can use Telus' SmartHome+ app to automate home temperatures and power down unused devices

Telus launched a new ‘SmartEnergy‘ subscription service it says can save Canadians up to 15 percent on their energy bills.

Subscribers can connect compatible smart devices like thermostats and plugs to Telus’ SmartHome+ app and then save on energy bills by using the app to automate home temperature settings, power down unused devices, and more.

Other benefits include the ability to monitor home energy consumption, view tips to maximize savings, and users can participate in “energy saving events to reduce strain on the energy grid during peak usage times by automatically powering down connected devices or temporarily adjusting the thermostat temperature.” Plus, users can earn Telus Rewards for doing it.

In an email to MobileSyrup, Telus said the 15 percent savings could amount to $250 or $300 depending on the province, home type, and heating source. However, SmartEnergy costs $12/mo ($144/year), so save at least enough to cover the cost of the service.

Until November 1st, Telus is also offering new subscribers the ability to pick a smart thermostat and two smart plugs for $25 ($279 value), though subscribers must stick with the service for at least 24 months. Telus will charge the discount amount back to customers who cancel early.
