Bell changes plans, adds $39/50GB and $49/50GB options [Update]

Bell also increased the amount of data offered with some plans

Bell has made several changes to its plans in recent weeks, with the latest and most notable change being to its lower-cost options, including (surprisingly) a price decrease.

Bell previously offered a ‘Promo 50’ plan specifically for existing customers who bring their own phones (BYOP). Update Sept. 16, 2024 at 9:34am ET: Bell’s website now specifies that the $39 and $49 Promo 50 plans are for add-a-line, a change that came after Rogers launched similar plans for add-a-line customers.

The plan was $70 with 50GB of 5G data, but was discounted to $44/mo with a monthly credit. Now, Bell has two versions of the Promo 50 plan, one at $39/mo that’s otherwise unchanged and one at $49/mo that doesn’t have the BYOP restriction.

Below is a list of all the changes I’ve noted:

  • $39/50GB 5G BYOP (previously $44/50G)
  • $49/50GB 5G (new)
  • $65/75GB 5G+ BYOP (previously 5G)
  • $75/100GB 5G+ (previously 5G with 75GB)
  • $80/150GB 5G+ BYOP (now BYOP-only)
  • $90/175GB 5G+ (new)
  • $100/175GB 5G+ Canada/U.S./Mexico BYOP (new)
  • $110/200GB 5G+ Canada/U.S./Mexico (previously $110/150GB)

All of the above plans currently include some kind of credit, most at $5/mo and some higher, that last 24 months.

Beyond the Promo 50 changes, the other biggest change is to the $75/mo plan, which leapt from 75GB to 100GB and gained 5G+ data. It’s not the only plan that gained 5G+ access, though notably, there’s no significant benefit here as all of Bell’s plans below $80/mo are capped at speeds of up to 250Mbps. Above $80, Bell’s data is at its “fastest available 5G+ speeds.”

Bell’s $110/mo Canada/U.S./Mexico plan is back up to 200GB of data now after losing 50GB earlier this year.

Perhaps the most interesting part to me is the proliferation of plans with a BYOP restriction. In the past, Bell simply offered a discount on certain plans for BYOP customers, but now it seems to be offering two of every plan, one for customers who want to get a phone and one for BYOP customers that’s lower in price and with slightly worse features.
