Google rolling out new quick reply box to Gmail for Android

iPhone users will get the new quick reply box later this year

Gmail for Android is getting a fancy new quick reply box, which should make responding to emails faster.

Per a Google blog post, the new quick reply option keeps users in the email they’re replying to, unlike the current setup, which boots people to a separate screen to draft their email response. This sounds like a significant improvement to me, as I like to reference the email as I draft my reply, especially if I’m trying to answer multiple questions or address various concerns.

However, Google intends the new quick response feature to be used for, well, quick responses. If you’re drafting a lengthy email reply, there’s a button to expand the box and access additional formatting options.

Also of note is that the quick reply box looks a lot like what you’d find in a messaging app, which could be confusing for some users.

Google notes that iPhone users won’t be left out of this change, with the feature set to arrive on iOS later this year. For now, though, it’s only on Android.

The quick reply box will roll out to all Google Workspace customers, individual subscribers and people with personal Google accounts starting August 26th. The gradual rollout began August 26th, but it can take as many as 15 days for the feature to appear for users.
