SyrupCast Podcast Ep. 109: Qualcomm vs. everybody and Mobile World Congress

This week’s show features Igor, Jessica, Patrick, and Rose. Not necessarily the Four Horsemen/women but also not a quartet of tomato-cans. Still trying to figure out if the “all killer no filler” line was a veiled nod to Sum 41.

Rose’s Qualcomm visit to San Diego led things off. This was an interesting segment. Rose’s experience and research on the subject provided ample substance for the foursome’s discussion. As a listener there was plenty to learn and while the subject matter is not as exciting as a flagship’s release, the technology will soon be ubiquitous. The team did a fine job of summing up 5G as more than a simple successor to 4G and imparting how this is a complicated technology that will have far reaching impact on our day to day mobile lives.

One question that came to mind was whether Qualcomm paid for Rose’s participation. It’s not uncommon, and frankly typical, of journalists to disclose this. It informs the audience of any potential conflicts that may temper the content’s integrity. MobileSyrup, if it truly fancies itself as a journalistic endeavor, should adopt these disclosures as a best practice.

The MWC discussion, at the mercy of not much pre-show fanfare, was light on content. The entire discussion was low key; a stark contrast to the opening that felt forced and artificial. Perhaps this segment was a way to balance the killer:filler ratio. Passing mention was made of the new LG, Samsung, Blackberry, and Sony offerings.

This week’s show gets a 7.5 SMSPR (Subjective MobileSyrup Podcast Review) score. 12 minutes of killer, 16 minutes of filler.
