Now, for the first time since introducing the ban on cellphone use while driving, the OPP declared that the number of “driver inattention-related” road deaths are on the verge of doubling the number of impaired-related deaths this year. As of mid-August, the number of distracted released deaths are currently at 38 while impaired driving is at 19.
“Don’t be a passenger of a distracted driver. Recognize that they are endangering your life. Speak up and insist that they focus on the road and on safe driving. By not doing so, you are contributing to the problem. Since 2009, our officers have investigated more than 600 road deaths that involved an inattentive driver. Consider how many of those innocent lives could have been saved had someone else in the vehicle intervened.”
During the Labour Day Weekend running from September 2nd to the 5th in 2016, the OPP will be doing its annual blitz, educating those caught using their devices while driving in the form of hefty fines.
