Telus removes roaming packages to Cuba as partner carrier hikes rates

Telus has removed its rather generous Cuba roaming packages effective today on news that its carrier partner in the country, Cubacel, has hiked rates to outside networks.

The news comes only 20 months after Telus significantly lowered its roaming costs in Cuba. As of today, roaming packages that include voice, text and data are no longer available to Telus’ personal or business customers. Instead, they will have to pay per-use costs of $2.50 per voice minute, $10 per megabyte of data, and $0.60 per outgoing text message from within the country.

Canadians traveling to Cuba are instead advised (by us, not Telus) to bring an unlocked phone and purchase a local SIM card, if possible, once in the country.

Update: It appears that Rogers includes Cuba as a Roam Like Home partner. We have reached out to Rogers to see if the country will be removed from the list and will update when we know more.
