Canadian Tire has gamified the shopping experience with hopes that it will lead to customers spending more money in its stores.
The Canadian Tire mPay & Play app is available today to Android and iPhone users in Canada, allows them to collect points from everyday purchases — but there is a catch. In order to receive the full benefits of the app — such as receiving 10 times more e-CT ‘Money’ — you’ll need to sign up a for a Canadian Tire Options MasterCard.
Once you have the required MasterCard you can start paying for all your transactions and earn points bonus e-Canadian Tire Money that you can spend in-store. As for the mPay & Play, Canadian Tire has created a way that you can “elevate your rewards”, being notified of exclusive offers from any of its brands, such as SportCheck, PartSource, and Mark’s.
The app gamification comes into play with badges that are based on your everyday shopping habits, such as grocery, pharmacy, and gas. After spending money on the MasterCard, users can tap on associated badges to earn additional e-money.
Within Canadian Tire stores you can actually pay for items with your mobile device through the app, but it’s barcode-based not tap and pay. The complete list of compatible devices includes iPhone 5 and above running iOS 8, and select Android devices running Android 4.1 or above, including the Samsung Galaxy S3 and above, Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and above, HTC One M7 and M8, Google Nexus 5 and 6, and the Moto X.
The app also gives you the option of seeing your MasterCard balance and the amount of e-Canadian Tire Money you have earned.
