As promised a few weeks ago, Google Maps and Google Earth for Android got huge updates today, bringing offline maps and advanced 3D imaging respectively.
The updates are a part of a broader push for a more comprehensive mapping system on Android as Google counters Apple’s direct attack in iOS 6. In Google Maps, you can now highlight a specific part of a city, or an entire city, to cache for offline use. These are saved in a list on your phone and you can review and remove them when necessary.
Google Earth has received a slightly bigger upgrade, bringing high-res 3D images to the fore. The official press states, “3D imagery: Take flight above entire cities in 3D. Get started with Los Angeles, Boston, San Francisco, Geneva or Rome and look for new additions in the coming weeks. Available for devices with dual-core processors.” So we can expect more cities very soon.
