The Canadian Wireless Telecommunications Association (CWTA) recently released a video that stated each year there are over 6 million 911 calls made from a mobile devices. A new stat straight from the Ottawa Police says that in 2009 they received 23,000 unintentional 911 calls. These calls are mainly due to “pocket dialing” which is a result of the device fumbling around your pockets and handbags, then accidentally calling 911 (and 911 operators have to call each one of these calls back to confirm there is no emergency).
Staff Sgt. Sandra McLaren “The best thing you can do to help us ascertain whether this is an actual call or an emergency is to stay on the line… Don’t be embarrassed. We realize with cellphone technology today it can be very simple for a false 911 call to occur”. In addition, the Police says we should avoid putting 911 on speed dial.
