Sony reveals new, smaller 22.5 megapixel smartphone camera sensor

Sony’s smartphone camera sensor technology can be found in almost every smartphone on the market, including ones from heavy hitters like Apple, Huawei and even Samsung.

Just in time for Mobile World Congress 2016, the company has unveiled its latest Exmor RS sensor, the IMX318. This new tech, which will likely be utilized in several devices set to be released in 2016, features a 1/2.5-inch stacked CMOS sensor with a resolution of 22.5 megapixels, as well as improved hybrid autofocus system that the company says can focus in on a subject in approximately 0.03 seconds.

The big take away from Sony’s announcement however, is that the sensor is considerably smaller than its predecessors and a significant improvement over the photography technology featured in Sony’s Xperia Z5. This means that the pesky lens bump featured in many smartphones could become a thing of the past as we move into 2016.

Sony’s Xperia Z5 features one of Android’s best smartphone cameras with some even citing that it rivals the photography capabilities of the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus.
