Microsoft spends $100 million on Sunrise Calendar to beef up its productivity offering

Sunrise

Just last week, Microsoft turned its $200 million Acompli acquisition into a fully-fledged part of its Office suite with iOS and Android versions of Outlook.

Now, Microsoft is attempting to strike gold twice with the purchase of Sunrise Calendar, a cross-platform social calendar app that is currently available on iOS, Android, Mac and the web. Sources say the company spent upwards of $100 million on the product and its employees.

According to Techcrunch, the Sunrise acquisition ties into Microsoft’s new multi-platform strategy, as Sunrises’s ability to synchronize with both Google and Microsoft Exchange calendars has led to significant traction in both the consumer and enterprise space. While it’s unclear whether Microsoft plans to merge Sunrise into its Office suite like it did with Acompli, Sunrise’s robust app suite could find a place — with a different name — as a standalone product within Office 365.

In addition to comprehensive native calendar support, Sunrise plugs into third-party services like Trello, Evernote, TripIt, Asana, Songkick and Todoist to be a single place for all one’s daily triage.
