Samsung roasts Apple for ‘reheating our leftovers’ with iPhone Duo

Apple's first-ever foldable comes more than seven years after the debut of the Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung spent the afternoon live posting during Apple’s big fall hardware event to roast the iPhone maker for its various announcements.

On X (Twitter), the official Samsung Mobile U.S. account made numerous posts that were clearly meant as digs at Apple, starting with “so far, so same” alongside the hashtag “#ItsTimetoSwitch.”

As the keynote went on and Apple hadn’t yet shown its first-ever foldable, the iPhone Duo, Samsung posted, “Making us wait? Fine. We’ll be over here, folding 3 ways.” After tagging DuoLingo and saying “they copied us too,” Samsung said “let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers.”

To Samsung’s credit, it launched its first foldable, the Galaxy Fold, way back in September 2019, with Motorola following suit with the foldable Razr in early 2020. Meanwhile, Google debuted its own take on the format, the Pixel Fold, in June 2023. And that’s not even getting into how Microsoft beat Apple to the punch with its own foldable called ‘Duo’ in 2021.

Clearly, then, the Duo comes years behind the competition. Interestingly, new Apple CEO John Ternus introduced the phone by taking indirect shots at other foldables, noting that “others have created foldables that just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together.” He said this “results in a square screen that’s poorly suited for the way people use them,” with vertical content scrolling feeling “compromised” and movies “are boxed in by oversized black bars, making a larger screen feel much smarter.”

Instead, Ternus says Apple wanted “a larger display that feels as natural and intuitive as iPad” with “thoughtful design and breakthrough engineering in a way only Apple can.” The result, he says, is “a series of remarkable innovations that we believe will redefine the experience of using a foldable phone.”

The Duo, which will launch on October 23 for $2,999, sports a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, grade five titanium for the frame and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front display for better scratch resistance, and various UI tweaks and new software features.
