Vancouver-based The Coalition’s Gears of War: E-Day will launch on October 6, 2026 on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
The release date was confirmed during the opening of today’s Xbox Games Showcase + Gears of War: E-Day Direct presentations. The first-ever gameplay from E-Day was also shown off. The prequel, which follows Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago during the titular cataclysmic event that tees up the original trilogy, was originally announced two years ago.
In the Xbox Games Showcase opening, we see Marcus Fenix and his friends in their civilian clothes as they run through a Locust-infested city of Kalona. New Xbox boss Asha Sharma also confirmed that the game will be an Xbox console exclusive, shutting down speculation that it may come to PS5 after a variety of Xbox multiplatform releases, including last year’s Gears of War: Reloaded.
A deeper dive into E-Day came immediately after the Xbox Games Showcase in the Gears of War: E-Day Direct. In it, we visited The Coalition and heard from several members of the team.
In terms of narrative, the Canadian developer says it wants to return to the darker, almost horror-tinged atmosphere of the original game. In particular, the team is emphasizing that these are younger and less experienced versions of Marcus and Dom, who are distant from one another at the start of the game amid the loss of a friend.
Gameplay-wise, The Coalition says it’s retaining the “heaviness” of the core third-person shooter gameplay but adding “fluidity” to make it more dynamic. A key part of this are “completely rebuilt movement and cover systems,” including new low-ground cover. You can also manually jump and slide while sprinting, affording more verticality in the level design.
