A new website aims to make it easier to watch all kinds of movies in Canada.
It’s called Moviescout, and it lists information on current-release movies at all of the theatres that are playing them. Notably, this includes independent cinemas — a nice way to support the little guys, considering Cineplex owns around 75 per cent of the country’s theatrical market share. Additionally, there are tabs and filters for Canadian and indie movies, while the images for the former will also contain little Canadian flags.

As an example of the site in action, here’s what it looks like when searching for the hit Canadian film Nirvanna the Band the Show the Movie, which is absolutely brilliant, and you really should see it if you haven’t. As you can see, indie theatres like Toronto’s Imagine Cinemas Carlton (my personal favourite) and Playhouse in Hamilton are shown alongside Cineplex’s Scotiabank Theatre Toronto.
You don’t just have to search by movie, either. There’s a handy Theatres section to let you see all of the theatres in your area. As someone who’s been making an effort to check out smaller, independent cinemas in recent months, I’m especially happy to see something like this.
It’s worth noting that while the U.S. has something like Fandango to aggregate this kind of information, Canada historically has not, so Moviescout certainly looks promising. Hopefully, it continues to grow over time.
