Cineplex is celebrating National Popcorn Day with a weekend of free popcorn.
While the “holiday” officially falls on Monday, January 19, Cineplex is running its promotion for four days, starting on Friday, January 16. This means that members of the free Scene+ program across Canada who buy a movie ticket between January 16 and 19 can get a small popcorn at no additional cost.
Alongside the promotion, Cineplex also revealed some fun facts about popcorn consumption in its theatres. Notably, the cinema chain says guests ate more popcorn in 2025 than the year prior, while the sold-out Minecraft Chicken Jockey tub alone accounted for more than 20 per cent of all of its popcorn bucket sales in 2025.
You can check out Cineplex showtimes on the theatre’s website or through the mobile app. Admittedly, the January period for movies is pretty slow, and this year is no exception. That said, this weekend will see the release of 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, Nia DaCosta’s anticipated sequel to last year’s acclaimed 28 Years Later that once again stars Ralph Fiennes, Jack O’Connell and Alfie Williams. It serves as the second entry in a trilogy and will feature an appearance by original 28 Days Later star Cillian Murphy to set up a lead role in the third and final film.
Beyond The Bone Temple, there are several other popular movies that remain in theatres from the Christmas season, including Avatar: Fire and Ash from Canada’s own James Cameron, Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme and Disney’s Zootopia 2. There’s also the recently released Primate, which garnered praise for its B-movie thrills.
