Nintendo will discontinue its Gold Points program on March 24th, 2025.
For years now, the program has allowed Nintendo customers to get five percent of their digital and physical purchases back in Gold Points, which could then be used as currency towards future eShop purchases.
Nintendo didn’t provide a reason for the end of the Gold Points program, although it did offer some other details about the move in a new support page.
To start, Nintendo says that customers can continue to earn Gold Points until March 24th, 2025 on both digital and physical game purchases, as well as purchases at its Nintendo New York retail store.
On top of that, digital content that is pre-ordered before March 24th at 9:30pm PT/March 25th at 12:30am ET will still earn Gold Points, even if the payment will be processed later.
Nintendo says any accrued Gold Points will remain usable beyond March 24th until the last day of the month 12 months after they’re earned. Platinum Points, which are earned for using various services or taking part in various tournaments, will remain supported beyond March 24th. These can be redeemed on physical goodies like stickers, hats and keychains.
In addition to the end of the Gold Points program, Nintendo has confirmed that Switch 2 games won’t be eligible for Vouchers use. Nintendo Switch Vouchers allow you to claim two eligible digital Switch games for the reduced price of $132.99, a marked discount from the $159.98 total you’d have to pay to get them when buying the $79.99 titles individually.
Interestingly, this suggests that Switch 2 games will cost more than $79.99, although that’s not all that surprising. Nintendo first experimented with $89.99 pricing with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom in 2023. It should also be noted that the standard price of current-gen games on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC is $89.99, so Switch 2 games costing the same would simply be aligning with industry trends.
For now, though, little has been confirmed about the Nintendo Switch 2 beyond its official design, which was revealed in a short video last month. That said, Nintendo has confirmed that a deep dive into the Switch 2 will come during a new Direct presentation on April 2nd at 9am ET/6am PT.
