Google Maps is adding a few new features this holiday season. Unfortunately, these features will first be available in the U.S. before heading to the Great North.
One of the new features allows for more detailed travel insights. Google Maps lets users report delays and see if their transit line is impacted. These map reports come directly from riders and local agencies. It’ll also show details showcasing where the subway entrances are and alternate transit routes on the map. You can also see additional information, such as if there’s a snowstorm or any other weather delays.
Google says that Canadian cities will be added soon.
Another feature you might notice in the U.S. is the ability to search for and buy items directly in Google Maps. You can now enter an item name in the research bar and select a store from the results. You’ll also get directions to pick it up. These include items from grocery stores, electronics, apparel and home goods.
This is launching in the U.S. to start, but it will eventually move to Canada.
Gemini is also coming to Google Maps. Allowing users to ask questions about places they’re going to and see a summarization of reviews instead of going through individual reviews. You can also type into Google Maps like “what do do with friends,” and get a curated list of suggestions. These features are rolling out in the U.S. as well. You can learn more about those updates here.
