Four years later, Microsoft has redesigned the Xbox Series X (inside)

The new Xbox models consume less power too

The new disc-less Xbox Series X is on store shelves now, and many people online are tearing them apart to see what’s new inside. YouTuber Austin Evens even found that the motherboard has been changed slightly, and some of the chips are smaller, allowing the console to consume a bit less power.

He also found that the SSD shield has been removed, and of course, there’s a blank space where the disc drive used to be. On top of that, there is no longer a vapour chamber on the chip; instead, Microsoft is using a more traditional copper heat pipe cooler to disperse heat more economically. None of these changes should change how the machine runs, especially if it’s inputting less power and, in turn, likely putting off a bit less heat.

Overall, it’s neat to peek behind the curtain and see Microsoft using its engineering department to help bring down the cost of the console four years after it originally launched.  You can learn more by watching the full teardown here.
