Redesigned Mac mini might drop USB-A ports altogether

I honestly don't think I've used a USB-A port on a Mac in years

Now that September is here, the Apple rumour mill is starting to cook, and the latest claim from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman suggests Apple will only use USB-C ports on the upcoming Mac mini.

A few weeks ago, Gurman leaked that a new Mac mini was likely going to come out this year with a really small footprint, making it look more like a tall Apple TV rather than a short Mac Studio. Now, he’s got more information that says there will be two USB-C ports on the front and three on the back. Alongside the rear ports will be ethernet, HDMI and a headphone jack.

Gurman also claims that the new device will have an internal power supply, which should help make it portable since it will likely be powered by a single cable. He also says that units are completed and will start shipping overseas to the U.S. shortly, which lines up with a release date later in the fall.

The device is also expected to have an M4 chip, and Gurman thinks Apple is working hard to align its PC offerings under the M4 banner, so we could expect M4-equipped MacBook Pros later this year with a new Air and Mac Studio in the spring.

While some users will likely be frustrated at the lack of USB-A options, it has been just under ten years since the 12-inch Retina MacBook (RIP) debuted with a USB-C port, and I think ten years is enough time for most people to upgrade their peripherals or buy an adapter.
