MobileSyrup’s weekly telecom roundup is back after a brief hiatus while I was away last week. There wasn’t a ton of telecom news this week, but here are the highlights (plus a few stories from the week before).
Pricing and deals
Telus and Koodo copied Rogers and rolled out $70 connection fees, which might be prohibited under the Telecommunications Act.
Telus was also in Koodo customers’ inboxes, trying to lure them into switching with $50/100GB and $65/200GB offers. Earlier this month, Telus texted similar offers to Koodo customers.
Koodo offered some former customers a $25/30GB win-back deal.
Fizz raised prices and started selling smartphones.
Infrastructure
CRTC announced funding for Telus, Bell and others to improve cell service across Ontario, Quebec and Newfoundland.
Yukon’s premier encouraged residents to file complaints with the CRTC over Bell’s poor service.
Elon Musk wants to provide free, global satellite emergency services via Starlink.
