In a Reddit AMA, Sonos CEO Patrick Spence clarified to users that the company was hopeful it could release its old app version, but it’s proven to be incompatible with products that have received modern updates.
The CEO goes on to clarify that Sonos’ software is more than just an app, it’s also software in the cloud and on the speakers — both of which have been updated since the troublesome update was released. Until recently, Sonos was testing the old app with the modern system, but it also turned out to be unstable. Spence says that now that the old app has been cleared from the table, the silver lining is that at least the full force of Sonos’ software team can now focus on fixing the new app.
Yesterday I jumped on Reddit for our monthly office hours to address questions from our community. I thought it would be useful to share the essence of a few of them here.

In a follow-up post on X (Twitter), Spence condensed some thoughts from the AMA and clarified that going forward, the original architect of the Sonos platforms is back in charge, and some of the top engineers at the company are personally working on the more complex bugs.
He also talks a bit about what he’s learned from this experience and how complex it can be to launch one system to work with the thousands of different network configurations that people have. Another example of a growing point he brings up for the company is its ongoing battle to better communicate with its customers and how it’s rolling out updates frequently to fix the app.
From the outside looking in, I appreciate how much Sonos and Spence especially have gone into damage control mode since the launch of the Ace headphones. It really seems like once the company was able to complete that project, it’s been able to pivot and focus on fixing its app. In late July, the company laid out a series of updates, and since then, it has rolled out two sizable patches and a third update with more of a focus on bug fixes. If you want to keep a closer eye on the patch notes, you can look at them here.
