Aside from showing the new desktop products that directly compete with AMD’s Zen 2-based Ryzen 3000 lineup, Intel has bigger news for the mobile consumer market coming out of Computex this year.
The company announced new architecture, called Sunny Cove, for its upcoming 10th gen mobile Ice Lake CPUs. Built on a refined 10nm node, Intel claims IPC improvement is up to 18 percent compared to the Skylake core that debuted in 2016. The Skylake core, which powered the Core i7 6700K, technically still forms the basis of the mentioned Core i9-9900 KS desktop processor.
Apart from a sizable IPC uplift, Intel also boasts a 2.5x increase in AI performance.
According to Anandtech, the range-topping variant of the 10th Intel mobile processor family is the quad-core Core i7-1065 G7, the quad-core mid-ranger is called i5-1035 G1 and the lowest is the dual-core i3-1005 G1. Intel’s press release says the 10th Gen Core mobile processors can turbo up to 4.1Ghz.
That said, Anandtech showed that the i7-1065 G7 has a base frequency of 1.3Ghz and a turbo frequency of 3.9GHz. Regardless, real-world clock speed varies depending on how the laptop is constructed. In other words, an excellent thermal design in a thicker laptop will allow the clocks to remain high for some time while a less capable thermal solution in a, let’s say a really slim ultrabook, may only sustain a turbo clock for a shorter time.
Intel also showed its Gen11 integrated GPU. The new GPU, with up to 64 EU units, outperforms the small AMD Vega GPU found in the Ryzen 7 3700U (not based on Zen 2 architecture) 25W mobile APU by around 10 percent regarding gaming. The slide shows that when compared to the 8th gen Core i7 8565U’s integrated GPU, the performance uplift goes up to 108 percent in a game called Three Kingdoms running on 1080p and low settings.
Performance aside, Intel is putting Thunderbolt 3 support into the 300 series mobile chipset, or the brain of a motherboard that holds everything together. With that, laptop makers no longer have to put separate TB3 controllers into the system to enable the I/O feature. As expected, there is built-in support for the new Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) for speedier wireless connectivity.
On top of this, Intel also debuted Project Athena, a program that the company says is to help laptop makers designing mobile computers that are faster, more responsible, feature better battery life, and have better AI capability and connectivity.
Intel says the program now includes more than 100 companies.
